Students have gathered at a touching memorial to remember a young rugby coach who died in tragic circumstances.

Australian national Tom Doolan, 19, died at the roadside when he was hit by a car in Woburn Hill, Addlestone on November 27.

He had been working at St George’s College coaching children for 11 months and it was thought to be returning home after a rugby match in Twickenham when the accident happened at 1.40am.

On Monday, November 29, Father Martin led a service at the school to remember the gap-year student’s life.

Fellow “gappies” attended, as well as friends from around the UK, and two from Europe who flew in especially.

A St George’s spokesman said: “Readings and prayers were interspersed with reflections and a piece of his favourite music. “The younger students, especially those who had known Tom well through his rugby coaching, found it to be a difficult experience.

“In the afternoon a calmer and less tearful occasion was attended by gappies, staff and parents at the junior school. “ "Pastoral deputy headteacher Iain Turner gave a wonderful description, filled with humour and passion, of Tom's work with the younger children, emphasising his dedication, love of the job, natural empathy and the esteem in which he was held.”

A further memorial service was held on Friday, December 9, to coincide with Mr Doolan’s funeral in Australia.

Friend Ben Patterson wrote on Facebook: “Taken from us far too soon. I will always cherish the memories of time spent with you.

“A great to us all, and one of my best. Rest in peace Tom, your memory will never be forgotten. Love you man.”
