The first female officer to make an arrest in Sutton borough is spearheading a campaign to recruit new police cadets.

Julie Ferguson, who is married to Sutton’s borough commander, detective chief superintendent Guy Ferguson, said: “Experiences gained in the police, whatever role, shape you and stay with you for life.”

“Young people between the ages of 14 to 18 years of age can join the police cadets. It’s an exciting way to meet wonderful people, pick up valuable life skills and find out more about policing, all whilst having a great fun time.“

In 1980. Mrs Ferguson, at that time Julie MacBride, along with two other female officers were the first women to make arrests in the borough, when they arrested a youth vandalising a roundabout in Banstead, which was then part of Sutton.

The Sutton police cadets were formed in Sept 2005 by PC Peter Lytton. There are currently 65 Sutton Police Cadets with many going onto a career within the Met.
