A man has been jailed by the courts for 10 years after firing a gun which is nearly 100 years old.

Shaun Calinder, 23, fired the Webley revolver near Sternhold Avenue, Streatham Hill, on the evening of July 4 this year.

Lambeth police officers patrolling the area heard the gunfire and chased Calinder towards Abbotswood Road, where they arrested him.

He was charged the next day with possession of a firearm and ammunition with intent to endanger life.

Calinder, of no fixed abode, was sentenced to 10 years for both crimes along with five years for possession of a prohibited weapon- with all sentences to run concurrently.

Detective Sergeant Darren Dervan, from Trident, said: "I am pleased with the lengthy prison sentence that Calinder has received after he mindlessly fired shots in a public place where innocent members of the public could have been hurt. Thankfully this time there were no injuries.

"The bravery of the unarmed officers who arrested Calinder was outstanding.

"I am pleased that another dangerous offender and weapon has been removed from the streets."
