A pub is being closed down next week to make way for a new Tesco Express to the disappointment of regulars.

The Grid Inn, Replingham Road, Southfields will stop trading on Friday, November 18.

Local people signed a petition earlier this month in a last minute attempt to save it, which gained 150 signatures.

John Sloan, a local government officer who has been going to the pub for five years said he was angry about the lack of public consultation over the decision.

He said: "One of the great things about Southfields is that it has a local butchers and a fruit and vegetable shop. Local businesses will be impacted on by having a Tesco Express.

"It is a popular pub where a group of people see it as a social hub and a place to meet."

A spokesperson for Wetherspoon confirmed the pub will be closing and staff will be relocated to another pub.

He said he plans to write to the chief executive of Wetherspoon to ask why there was no consultation.

Wetherspoon chairman Tim Martin said: "It's a sad occasion when a pub shuts, but I'm glad that Tesco are taking over the premises so that local jobs will be created.

"I hope our customers will still visit us at our pubs in Putney, Wimbledon and surrounding areas."
