The Wheatsheaf Inn was originally built as a coaching house opposite the Pond in the 18th century where passengers could take refreshments while their horses were being watered at the Pond. The present building has changed relatively little over the last hundred years.

According to legend the Inn is haunted by the ghost of the daughter of a former landlord. There are several versions of this story, one tells how the girl was mysteriously murdered and her body dumped in the Pond. Since that night her ghost is said to occasionally haunt the Inn.

In fact, hauntings at the Inn were investigated by an organisation known as UK Paranormal Investigations. Occurences included a permanantly cold boiler room and bottles moving on their own. The team's recording equipment recorded not only shuffling noises, but many orbs of light which is supposed to be evidence of paranormal activity, and even more strangely a voice saying 'hello'. In fact, they asked the 'spirit' to move the orbs around a team member's head one or two times and the orbs did move, which has convinced the landlady that the pub is haunted.

Thornton Heath house hauntings Ghosts have haunted residents in Thornton Heath during the 1930s and the 1970s. In 1938 researcher Nandor Fodor investigated a case where he claimed the victim of a poltergeist was actually possessed by the spirit of a murderer and her visions and nightmares were in fact memories of some sort. These events took place, allegedly at Beaverstone Road where the Fielding family experienced thrown crockery, furniture damage and garments disappearing from residents.

Even more recently in the 1970s, a Mrs Forbes claimed to have been attacked and choked by a vampire like apparition which left bite marks on her neck and burn marks caused by an invisible force wrenching a necklace from her neck. She also claimed to have been bitten on the arm by a tiger. When she was studied in a laboratory, dishes and other objects were thrown around, but researchers claimed that she was either manifesting the activity or using 'psi - trickery'.

A whole family were also, allegedly, plagued by a poltergeist which hit the man of the family in the forehead with a Christmas decoration. During Christmas 1972, the family's tree and decorations were shaken and footsteps could be heard throughout the house in the lead up to the New Year. The son even claimed to have awoken one night to see a man dressed in old fashioned clothing staring menacingly at him. The family had the house blessed but it did not work. A medium claimed the spirit was an 18th century farmer who lived there and saw the current occupants as invaders. Even his wife was said to haunt the building dressed in a pinafore with her hair in a bun. The family eventually moved out.

UFO Sightings There have been at least three recorded UFO sightings in Thornton Heath; the first in September 2002 by a witness only known as Ian; the second on Trafford Road on the 6th of March 2009 and the third on the 2nd of January 2011 by a witness known as Daniel N.

Thornton Heath Library A cleaner was finishing her shift when she heard a massive thump like all the bookcases had fallen over, but when she went to investigate nothing had been disturbed except that her shoes, which she had changed on arrival had been moved, and there was no one else in the building.

Strange smells, noises and objects disappearing; people being sighted out of the corner of the eye only to disappear and a strange movement caught on CCTV have also been reported.
