AN UNMARKED police car rushing through a red light at a busy junction with its sirens blaring has been involved in a collision with another motorist.

A 41-year-old woman was taken to the Princess Royal Hospital with neck pain after the crash at the Fiveways crossing in New Eltham. There are not thought to have been any major injuries.

Witness Margaret Gladdish, of Sidcup Road, said the year-old police ford Mondeo heading south on the A20 and four-year-old Peugeot 308 attempting to go into Green Lane collided at about 11.15am.

Mrs Gladdish said: “I was crossing the road. It frightened the life out of me.

“I heard a big bang and I saw the woman climb in to the back of the Peugeot. I think she had a child in there, she had a child seat.”

Mrs Gladdish called 999 and said an ambulance was there within minutes. She added: “The old bill started flying up here, too.”

Officers quickly closed the southbound lane of A20 and the west-bound lane of Green Lane.

Mrs Gladdish, of Sidcup Road, said: “I have been here seven years and I have never seen an accident like this.

“It is very bad at the junction. There is always traffic up here. Something has to be done about it.”

Lynne Sparham, whose 88-year-old mother lives near the junction, added: “I reckon 90 per cent of people you talk to will say about this junction being dangerous. This is a horrendous junction.

“There have been quite a few accidents at the crossing.”
