A flat was damaged in a blaze last night caused by cooking tempura.

Firefighters were called to the four room flat on the second floor of Boulevard Mansions in Balham High Road at around 8.30pm.

The block was evacuated until the fire was put out just after 9pm. It did not spread to neighbouring flats.

A man and a woman were treated for smoke inhalation by ambulance staff but did not need hospital treatment.

Neighbour Alison Cowan said: "The flat has smoke damage to the kitchen but no other flats were harmed. It's just a bit of a mess."
