A woman who celebrated her 107th birthday last week could be the oldest woman in Surrey.

Phyllis Sutton, from Banstead, who has never stayed in hospital for more than one night, turned 107 on Friday, October 6, surrounded by her family.

Her son, Charles Sutton, puts his mother’s good health down to the fact that she enjoys a glass of wine.

He said: "I think it’s just amazing and she’s, in a way, still got her faculties.

"She repeats things time and time again, which is understandable, but she’s very with it.

"She’s always been very fit and she enjoys a glass of wine in the evening and maybe that helps."

Married for 44 years before her husband died in 1968, Mrs Sutton has three children, seven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Born in Sidcup, Kent, Mrs Sutton moved to Banstead in the 1930s where she served in the Women’s Voluntary Service during World War Two.

"She remembers that during those war years a lot of time was spent living in a shelter underground which often got flooded out.

"Every time an air raid warning went off she would go down there.

"It was hard work bringing us all up during that time."

A housewife throughout her life, Mrs Sutton still lives at home on her own but has the support of a full-time carer.

Mr Sutton added: "She loves to watch the birds in the garden and talk about years gone by."
