Residents and businesses have said enough is enough after the opening of a key road was delayed for a second time.

Queens Road, Weybridge, first closed on August 15, the day after the Olympic road race, and weeks of traffic misery have ensued.

Traders have reported a notable fall in business, with people avoiding the area around the closure at Haines Bridge.

Veolia Water, which is carrying out the works, originally said they would be finished on October 3, then cited unforeseen circumstances when it failed to open, before giving a new date for partial reopening on October 8.

It again failed to open on October 8, and has now said it will be fully open in Queens Road on October 15, with Oatlands Avenue remaining shut until October 21.

Walton resident Matthew Hicks, who used to drive on the road most days, said: "It is beyond a joke. Why give a date and then go back on your promise?

"I don’t think they actually understand the trouble it has caused.

"It’s even worse when you get your hopes up that it’s going to open and drive down there to see it’s still closed. It has been a nightmare."

A spokesman for Veolia Water said the delays were unexpected and caused by the amount of excavation that needed doing by hand.

They said: “We completely understand that this is frustrating and the delay in the road opening has caused disappointment to the local community.”

Councillor Peter Harman said he was appalled by the lack of consultation between Veolia, Surrey County Council and residents, and said he hoped a review would be carried out afterwards.
