Actor, dancer and TV personality, Lionel Blair, turned out to support a charity coffee morning this weekend in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

The 79-year-old, who lives in Banstead, was asked to the event at the Green Man pub in Ewell on Saturday, October 8, by organiser Peter Earnshaw after a chance meeting.

Mr Earnshaw, who is recovering from cancer himself after being diagnosed 18 months ago, said: "We often see him in the village and I was in the pub having a pint and I thought I would grab him.

"I was astounded at people’s generosity.

"Having cancer is very debilitating and it does knock you for six.

"Macmillan has helped not only financially but psychologically.

"It’s someone to talk to which is really important."

MP for Epsom and Ewell, Chris Grayling and the mayor, Councillor Sheila Carlson, also turned up to show their support at the event which raised £850.

John Kerwood, co-owner of the Green Man, said: "We had a cracking raffle and all the local businesses donated prizes.

"Lionel did a fantastic job.

"He was here for ages and he really worked hard to get people to give money.

"It was a resounding success."
