The headteacher at a school where a boy died after falling off a climbing frame has moved to reassure parents.

Tolworth Infant and Nursery School headteacher Rachel Nye spoke after the six-year-old boy died this afternoon.

She said: “It is with the deepest sadness that I have to inform parents and carers that a tragic accident occurred in the playground at lunchtime today.

“I know that all our thoughts and sympathy will be with the child’s family.

“Children’s wellbeing is paramount at Tolworth Infant and Nursery School and it is in their best interest that our school is open as usual tomorrow.

“Staff have planned how they will support children and families and there will be additional adults in school.

“We are working with the police, Local Authority and the health and safety executive and a full investigation is taking place.

“Further communication will be sent to all our families on Friday.

"In the meantime I appreciate your support in ensuring that school is as calm and secure for the children as usual."

The leader of Kingston Council has also offered support to the family of a boy who died in a tragic accident this afternoon.

Councillor Derek Osbourne said the authority was saddened by news.

He said: “Our collective hearts go out to the family and friends of the child and to the whole school community.

“The council will provide the support that is required for all those who are struggling to come to terms with this news.

"Paramedics arrived on the scene quickly following the accident but unfortunately the child died before reaching hospital.

"A full investigation will take place to understand the cause of this distressing accident."

London Ambulance said when paramedics arrived the child was unconscious and not breathing.

A spokesman said he was taken to a west London hospital, but pronounced dead on arrival.

Police are currently treating the death as unexplained and have launched a full investigation.
