Mr Jones should be trying to get speed limits changed rather than advocating breaking them (Slow traffic is not the safety answer, August 24).

I quote from Parliament's Select Committee Report HC 577-1, page 66: "The full cost to the nation of road traffic accidents is very large; a DTLR study has estimated it to be £17billion in a single year. If drivers travelled at lower and more appropriate speeds, the savings to society would be immense, as savings to individuals would be. If measures in this report were to achieve a reduction of road traffic accidents by a third the savings to society could be as great as £100million per week.

"Illegal and inappropriate speed is a major contributory factor in crashes and casualties in both urban and rural areas."

Why should the motor car dominate in residential areas? Pedestrians and cyclists are entitled to share road space without the noise, pollution and unease or danger caused by speeding.
