I'd like to bring to the attention of your readers an appeal that's been running at 1st Cuddington (Warspite) Sea Scout Group, based in Cunliffe Road in Stoneleigh.

As has been reported, we are looking to redevelop our HQ to provide a first-class facility for future generations of young people, a facility of a standard that cannot be attained by attempting to repair or renovate the existing building.

We have been running an appeal since the end of May to, initially, raise £5,000 to fund our detailed planning application and also to explore ways of raising as much of the estimated £350,000 of the build costs as we can.

We have kindly been donated 5,000 Megabloks (children's building bricks) from the manufacturer and every time we raise £1 we add a brick to the Warspite wall.

Once the wall is complete, not only will we have reached our initial target but we will then donate the bricks to the Children's Trust at Tadworth. The wall currently stands at 2,981 bricks.

The latest fundraiser towards our appeal is our participation in the 22-mile Great River Race on Sept 16. The race starts at Ham House, near Richmond and runs to Greenwich.

I, myself, am part of a six-man crew and there are other crews from the Scout and Explorer sections taking part.

I am therefore appealing to the readership of the Epsom Guardian to sponsor our efforts towards what we believe to be a fantastic cause.

Every week there are stories locally about antisocial behaviour and we like to think we are providing brilliant alternatives to hanging out for our young people.

The simplest, and by far most effective way to help is to visit justgiving.com/warspite.

This site is particularly good as 28p in the pound is also clawed back from the Exchequer if the donor is a UK tax payer.

Alternatively, cheques payable to 1st Cuddington Fund Raising can be sent c/o 5 Briarwood Road, Stoneleigh, Epsom, Surrey, KT17 2LX.

Please help us build our wall and hasten the day when we can hand ownership of all those bricks to the Children's Trust.
