A rosary used by Derek Bentley - the last person to be hanged in Britain - will be among exhibits at the newly refurbished Croydon Museum when it finally opens next week, more than 18 months behind schedule.

Following a £1million overhaul the Croydon Museum will open on September 21, replacing the award-winning interactive Lifetimes Museum, which closed on Christmas Eve 2004.

It promises a bigger and better journey through the borough's cultural history and new exhibits include the rosary used by Derek Bentley as well as the beret and shades worn by Croydon punk rocker Captain Sensible.

Councillor Steve Hollands, cabinet member for culture and sport, said: "The museum really tells the story of our borough, and with a constantly changing collection of exhibits, there's always going to be something new to see - and that's guaranteed to reward repeat visits."
