At the seventh attempt, the Robins finally came good with a 3 goal blast in the last fifteen minutes of their game against fellow strugglers Walton & Hersham to record their first league win of the season and give their long suffering supporters something to cheer about.

The final result was all the more surprising bearing in mind that the first half was goal less although the visitors probably had the edge in terms of chances created.

Manager Dave Garland's decision to switch to a 3-5-2 formation was almost exposed in the first minute when a snap shot by Goggin from Walton's first attack hit the post and flashed across the Robins goal.

Minutes later Craig Dundas, restored to the strikers role, came close for the home team with a header from a cross from the right by Howard. The Robins suffered a setback when John Cartledge came off worse from an accidental clash of heads and had to leave the field with blood streaming down his face to be replaced by young Liam Harwood on the left side of the defence.

Walton's best chance of the first half came on the half hour when Simon Huckle's ball in from the right was missed by keeper Seuke and also Walton striker Savage with the goal at his mercy.

Omari Coleman showed flashes of the form that has eluded him so far in Robin's colours beating his marker on the goal line and cutting in from the right but his final ball drifted across the goal without anyone getting a touch.

Coleman had the ball in the net just before the break, but the referee had already stopped play to allow an injured Walton player to receive treatment.

The game plodded on after the break with neither team able to impose themselves on their opponents, but a double substitution fifteen minutes into the half, particularly the introduction of Mark Marshall down the left flank, at last began to turn the game to the Robin's advantage.

Marshall's run down the left ended with a cross that was just too high for the Robin's attackers, but for the first time Walton began to struggle to deal with the Robins' attacks. With 15 minutes left, Carshalton did something they had failed to achieve so far this season, namely to take the lead in a game.

Harwood, who had grown in confidence as the game went on, hit a pass to Coleman who quickly moved the ball on to Craig Dundas.

The Robins' striker drew keeper Gindre off his line before hitting a low shot into the net. Five minutes later Marshall broke away down the left and played an excellent pass behind the Walton defence for Omari Coleman to run on to. It looked as though his touch may have been too heavy but the keeper followed the line of the pass and the Robins striker finally opened his account with an angled shot that found the far corner of the goal.

The icing on the cake for the Robins came two minutes from the end when Mark Marshall picked up the ball in the right hand channel and ran at the heart of the Walton defence, holding off several challenges before shooting against the keeper.

The ball was deflected onto the post and back into play, but Marshall was first to the rebound to head home a goal that his cameo appearance richly deserved.

The excitement of the final quarter of an hour will have gone a long way to erasing the memory of much of what had been seen earlier and at last there was a vision of what the Robins side is capable of if they can get their game together.

The other bonus was the continuing excellent form of David Graves and a mature display by substitute Harwood to cover the absence of the injured Cartledge which earned him the supporters' man of the match award. A better day all round.
