After nearly 15 years as a landmark venue, Streatham Kart Raceway could be leaving the area for good.

The go-karting business was scheduled to move as part of the Tesco’s Streatham Hub investment, but it operations manager Gareth Howell said Lambeth Council has been no help with relocation and the business had “been left out in the cold”.

He said it was now considering leaving the borough for good.

He said: “The council and the councillors have been absolutely useless.

“They haven’t helped us negotiate rates or offered us alternative sites. Just a bit of help would have been nice.”

Streatham Raceway has been a part of the high road since 1996, and the company that owns it, Playscape, was founded by Mr Howell’s father, Martin, in 1986.

The kartway must be vacated by September 1.

Playscape has looked at several potential new sites for the raceway and is hoping to relocate to Purley Way.

Mr Howell said: “Croydon were a breath of fresh air in comparison to Lambeth.”

A Lambeth Council spokesman said: “We’re sympathetic to the Streatham Kart Raceway, and have been offering them all the support and advice we can to help them find an alternative site. It’s not the case that we have not tried to help.”

However, higher rents across London threaten any potential move, and Mr Howell said: “To be honest, I’m not sure it will be able to continue.

“It looks like it could be pretty difficult to get anywhere.”
