Nearly 1,000 young people attended the annual Youth Leisure Day (YLD) Xtreme on Saturday, July 9, organised by local young people alongside Epsom & Ewell Council's leisure developments team.

The event, held at Rosebery Park in Epsom, provided young people with a free day of entertainment highlighting the leisure opportunities and initiatives being run throughout the borough.

The event included martial arts, BMX and Parkour displays, an art identity project, local live bands, inflatable games, arts and crafts, a climbing wall and more.

A ‘have your say’ tent was also available to offer young people the chance to express their opinions and make suggestions on topics such as sport, community safety and local democracy.

Councillor Jan Mason, chairman of the leisure committee said: “Every year this event gets better and better.

“It was designed by young people for young people and judging by the response on the day, it has been a hugely successful event.

“Improving services for young people is one of the council’s priorities and we are delighted that many of the activities highlighted here are available in the Borough through the year.”

This year’s event saw young people take the lead in its organisation with a young person’s steering group set up to organise the event and ensure that the activities provided would be popular with young people.

17 young people from across the borough volunteered their time on the day to ensure that YLD Xtreme 2011 was a success.
