A vibrant and modern re-telling of the Greek tragedy of Medea is due to show at the Rose Theatre in Kingston tomorrow night, write Nicola Stewart.

If its excellent reception both at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre 2010 and the National Student Drama Festival 2011 is anything to go by, the performance is definitely not to be missed.

No prior interest of Greek tragedy is required as the show brings the ancient tale to life with exciting imagination and flair. The edgy show is set in the criminal world of London, where Jason is getting ready to marry Glauce.

However, in the run-up to the wedding, characters from his past cause trouble. For one thing, he is haunted by his relationship with Medea, as well as his violent Uncle Pelias.

The audience is kept in suspense as they watch the story unfold and wonder what will happen on the big wedding day: will it end in shocking tragedy?

Throughout the play, the stories of famous characters such as Hercules and Hades unravel.

Tom Brennan stars as Jason. Isabella Peters plays Medea and, according to The Stage, she "sings and acts a storm".

The show – described as having "daring physicality" - was directed by Tid, who was recently nominated for an Off West End Theatre Award (OFFIE).

Jason and Medea was originally developed by the Bristol Old Vic Young Company and will be at the Rose Theatre on Saturday, July 16 and Sunday, July 17. Tickets range from between £5 and £15.
