Brooklands College’s construction department dazzled Hampton Court Flower Show with an award-winning charity garden, after collaborating with gold medallist landscape architect Bill Butterworth.
The garden was first put on display by the Weybridge students on July 4 and was reviewed by Monte Don in a BBC special broadcast from Hampton Court Flower Show.
It was made for acclaimed charity Kids Company and their centre in London. The charity provides valuable support for 14,000 deprived inner city children. Some children from the charity, aged between five and nine, were involved in the garden project itself.
Participants from Brooklands College ranged from nine level 2 carpentry diploma students to eight students from the level 1 painting diploma team. Dragon scales were completed by foundation learning students from the Elev8 programme.
Having starred at the show the garden after which time it will be transferred to Kids Company.
The garden is based on the theme of the Jabberwocky by Lewis Carol and has won an impressive gilted silver award from the RHS in the themed garden category.
David Barker is Brooklands College’s head of construction. He said: “We were given three weeks’ notice with the project. The students had a fantastic time. It was very interesting and challenging.”
