A £6.6m leisure centre, including a 25 metre pool, could be built in Banstead if the council gives the green light next week.

The proposal it has drawn up following public consultations includes a six lane pool, a 13 metre by 7 metre teaching pool, a 50 station fitness gym, a 30 person exercise and dance studio, separate wet and dry changing rooms, crèche facilities and a cafeteria.

The recommendation, due to be debated on July 21, is to build the new leisure centre in Preston on Merland Rise.

Of the £6.6 million estimated costs, £4.3 million will be raised from capital funds having already been allocated to the project in the draft 2011-15 corporate plan.

The remaining money will be reliant upon income generated by the redevelopment and regeneration of Merland Rise.

If this money does not come in then the proposed facilities may need to be scaled-back.

Reigate and Banstead Councillor Adam De Save, executive member for healthy communities said: “We have thoroughly investigated a range of options for the new leisure centre and their implications and we have listened to what is important to local residents when drawing up these recommendations.

“Our significant investment in improving leisure facilities across the borough, despite the difficult economic climate and constraints of the council’s budget, demonstrates our commitment to helping residents’ live healthy and active lifestyles.”

If approved by councillors, the council would begin discussions with Surrey County Council, leisure partners and other organisations to look into the feasibility of combining the Phoenix Centre and Tattenham Community Hall with the new leisure centre.

Coun De Save added: “The council and its partners are committed to regenerating Preston to improve facilities and opportunities for local residents and make the area a nicer place to live.

“The new leisure centre is a fundamental part of those plans.” For more information visit reigate-banstead.gov.uk
