A teenager is fighting for his life after crashing a suspected stolen motorbike into a BT box in Hackbridge this morning.

The 16-year-old, from Mitcham, was involved in the incident at the junction of London Road and Park Road at 5am.

He is understood to have suffered very serious, possibly life-threatening, condition and was rushed to St George's Hospital, in Tooting.

Sutton police officers picked up the 16-year-old boy’s mother from her home this morning and took her to the hospital.

A 17-year-old, who was also involved in the crash, is in a critical condition although his injuries are not life-threatening.

It is understood the motorbike had been stolen before the crash although this has not been confirmed.

A spokesman said: “We were called at 5am to reports of a road traffic collision.

"We sent two ambulances, two fast responders and an air ambulance to the scene.”

Police were forced to redirect traffic around the Hackbridge bridge because an air ambulance was despatched to the scene.

A spokesman for Sutton police said: “Road closures which had been put in place following the incident were cleared by around 10am.

“Police believe the motorcycle to be stolen but enquiries are continuing.
