Members of Transition Ashtead and Save Ashtead’s Village Environment (SAVE) ‘extremely saddened’ after vandals damaged their vegetable planters positioned outside Tesco.

Damage to the ‘Village Vegetable’ project, which encourages people to grown their own produce, was discovered on Sunday, July 10, by member Turid Huston as she went to tend the bed.

She said: "I was so angry and disappointed to see the runner beans and canes had just been pulled out and dumped further along the site".

Gillian Russell, spokesperson for SAVE, said: "Village Vegetables is a brilliant project which is definitely helping to improve our street environment.

"The traders have been enthusiastic and are watering regularly.

"It has brought together the whole community, however it does depend totally on trusting people to value it.

"In an ideal world those who have damaged the vegetables would participate in the project as everyone is welcome to join in."
