A fun-loving mother who nursed her 11-year-old daughter after a traumatic accident involving an ambulance has been nominated as parent of the year.

Lauryn Goolamy nominated her mum Lorraine Worrall, whose fantastic cooking helped her recover from a broken ankle after she was run over.

Mrs Worrall, 40, from Thornton Heath, said it was a huge shock to hear she had been nominated for the Croydon Champion award by her daughter.

She said: “I had no idea she was nominating me, I thought she might be nominating her dad but I didn’t think she would do this.”

The student at Westwood College for Girls wrote: “I am nominating my mum because she is totally crazy and weird but that is why I love her.

“My mum is one of my heroes and she is always there for me.

“When I got run over a year ago, she was at the hospital every day.”

In August last year, Lauryn was hit by a fast- response ambulance and broke her ankle in three places, meaning she had to have a major operation and two months of recovery.

Mrs Worrall, who was with her daughter throughout the ordeal, is hopeful Lauryn will make a full recovery after a potential further operation.

She said: “When the accident happened, we were worried that Lauryn wouldn’t be able to walk down the aisle at my wedding last year to her father. Fortunately, she was able to without crutches and had made a good recovery by then.”

Lauryn said her recovery was down to Mrs Worrall’s dedication and support throughout the whole period.

It could also have been down to some of Mrs Worrall’s “fantastic cooking” which her daughter loves so much.

She said: “Lauryn and I cook together and we all eat as a family.”
