A multi-million pound scheme aimed at getting more people cycling and walking to work could be coming to Croydon.

London Assembly Member Jenny Jones is coming to Croydon to see whether the Smarter Travel scheme will work in the borough.

The green plan was originally tested in neighbouring borough Sutton, and encouraged residents to get out of their cars and use bikes instead.

Mayor of London Boris Johnson awarded the borough £5million to implement the transport plan.

It included £1.8m for essential road maintenance plus another £3m spent on a range of transport projects such as improving pedestrianised areas in the town centre and making the borough more bike friendly.

If the scheme were to be introduced to Croydon it could signal a significant investment in green transport infrastructure in the borough.

Assembly member Jones said: "I would like to see the number of new cyclists rising in Croydon.

“It seems obvious that Croydon is a perfect candidate for a bike hire scheme of its own. If the Mayor is serious about getting more cyclists, this should be the first pilot of a separate scheme.

“The Mayor has promised a cycling “revolution” for the capital and would like to see one million trips made by bike per day by 2025, but this will only happen if Londoners new to cycling feel safe and confident enough to try it out.

“This is why I am promoting the idea of Croydon being one of many flagship neighbourhood cycling areas, concentrating on encouraging people to get out of their cars for everyday journeys like the school and shopping runs.”

The Green Party member said there should be safe cycle routes for schools, with 20mph streets for cycling a priority.

She added: "With a little encouragement, hopefully people will see that cycling is a fun, cheaper and healthier alternative from gas guzzling cars."
