Surrey County Council and Surrey Police have launched a new campaign encouraging motorists to look out for motor-scooters and motorbikes.

The latest Drive Smart campaign focuses on young riders, with the message: “Don’t let your first bike be your last”.

Figures from 2010 showed 16 to 20-year-olds accounted for 23 per cent of all motorcycle casualties in Surrey, while collision rates were highest from 8am to 9am and 5pm to 6pm, indicating the vulnerability of young riders commuting to college or work.

Councillor Andrew Povey, leader of Surrey County Council, said: “I’m concerned to see almost a quarter of all those injured on motorcycles or mopeds are young people. The freedom that comes with getting your first vehicle is incredibly exciting but over exuberance can have devastating consequences.”

The Drive Smart initiative was launched in September 2009.
