An organ transplant survivor who had been given months to live has returned home with a medal won at an Olympics-style event for people who have had organ transplants.

Jamie Jessup, who lives in Morden, won bronze in the men’s badminton doubles with partner John Fox, 22, at the World Transplant Games held in Gothenburg, Sweden, last month.

Mr Jessup, 21, was born with renal failure and survived thanks to hospital care and a life-saving kidney operation when he was 10-years-old.

He said: “To bring back bronze against such strong international transplant competitors is a real achievement and I’m absolutely thrilled with the result.

"It’s testament to what you can achieve if you put your mind to it.

“I was delighted to be selected to represent my country at the games and the medal is the icing on the cake.

"I’m very grateful to my family, teammates, coaches and sponsor for all their support.”

The World Transplant Games, held every two years, features seven days of sporting events and the UK team of 140 athletes joined over 1,800 others from some 57 countries - all of whom have undergone an organ transplant.
