Carshalton Athletic manager Dave Garland changed his tune after his side's latest defeat on Tuesday night - it's not just the players who are to blame for the Robins poor form the management have got it wrong, too.

Garland promised to completely overhaul his squad following dismal defeats to Hampton & Richmond Borough and Tonbridge Angels over the Bank Holiday weekend.

A week later, after a 0-0 draw at Billericay Town and a 2-0 defeat at home to Heybridge Swifts, and Garland now admits that his tactics were also at fault.

"I am disappointed by our start, but I'm more surprised at the difference in the style of play in the two leagues," said Garland.

That is what we have to adjust to.

"I'm not making excuses. The fans are not happy, the board is not happy. They are right to be annoyed and it is up to us to turn things around."

Carshalton have picked up just two points from six games this season -a shock start considering the how close the Robins came to causing a great escape in Nationwide Conference South at the tail end of last season after a dismal start.

Garland's reasoning for this echoes pundits who believe that many of the classy international footballers who grace the Premiership would not be able to cope with the rough and tumble of the Championship.

Apparently, a similar dichotomy exists between Nationwide Conference South and Ryman Premier.

"Our plan was to play the kind of football that was getting us results in the Conference South last season, but I now realise that was a mistake," admitted Garland.

"The tempo is a lot quicker at this level and the style is more aggressive.

"We have to change our game plan to account for that."

Garland hopes to "adjust" his squad in time for Saturday's match at home to fellow strugglers Walton & Hersham, when new signing, 26-year-old Bromley winger Gary Drewett, should start.

It would be no surprise if Garland introduces more fresh faces to his attack. Carshalton have only scored twice in six games and have not found the net in their past four.

Midfielders Tony Quinton (ankle) and Mark Hawthorne (hamstring) are not expected to be fit to face Walton.
