A second teacher in Sutton was struck by lightning on Tuesday.

Nadim Rahman, assistant headteacher at Carshalton High School for Girls,is understood to be one of three people to have been treated at at St Helier Hospital after being hit by lightning during a storm on Tuesday afternoon.

Mr Rahman was trying to get children to take shelter from a storm when a lightening bolt hit the umbrella he was carrying.

He said pupils who saw the incident told him a huge bolt of lighting crashed into scaffolding on a new sixth form building at the school before splintering off and hitting his umbrella.

He said: "All of a sudden I remember the umbrella in my right hand being flung away and my right arm feeling quite hot and shaking a lot.

"I remember looking at it and thinking what's going on?"

"The girls were running up to me and saying 'are you ok?'"

Doctors at St Helier Hospital told Mr Rahman he could well have suffered a heart attack, which would have been even more likely if he had been carrying the umbrella in his left hand, because of the link to the heart.

He said he was most likely saved by his umbrella having a plastic handle.

Mr Rahman is one of three people understood to have been treated at St Helier Hospital on Tuesday after being hit by lightning.

Tom Langham, who works at Hackbridge Primary School, was knocked to the ground after being struck by lightning in the school playground.

Another man is also understood to have been treated at St Helier Hospital at the same time.
