Part of Victoria Road in Surbiton has been closed off after a hole appeared in the pavement.
A spokesman for Kingston Council said: "A hole has formed in the surface of Victoria Road, Surbiton at the junction with Brighton Road, uncovering a void in the structure of the carriageway.
"The area has been immediately coned off for health and safety reasons."
Engineers are investigating the cause of the collapse and how much work would be needed to repair it, she said.
A spokesman from Surbiton YMCA, on Victoria Road, said: "There are workmen. It’s just on the junction between the end of Victoria Road and Brighton Road.
"It’s just where it splits into two lanes. The right one is coned off and the other one is still open.
"It’s difficult to see how big it is or what’s going on because it’s cordoned off and they are working there."
