A doctor was stabbed by a patient in a secure hospital ward yesterday.

The female consultant psychiatrist, 33, was attacked with a hair clip by the 46-year-old patient while working on Rose Ward at Queen Mary's Hospital, Roehampton, at 10am.

She suffered minor injuries to her hands, arms, face and neck and was taken to Kingston Hospital for treatment.

Her attacker was arrested and was bailed before being moved to a secure hospital.

Rose Ward is an acute admissions ward for adults requiring close observation, assessment and treatment.

A source said: "Patients are supposed to be searched for weapons when they go in the ward. I heard there was quite a bit of blood on the floor."

A statement from South West London and St George's Mental Health NHS Trust said: "The Trust is aware of a serious incident involving a patient and a member of staff at Queen Mary’s Hospital, Roehampton.

"Prompt action has been taken to ensure the safety of all involved in this incident.

"As with any serious incident, a full review has already been instigated."
