Thieves stole valuable copper from the roof of a West Norwood crematorium.

The thieves made off with a section of the copper roof from the High Street building some time over the weekend, believed to be either Saturday (June 4) afternoon or Sunday (June 5).

Staff worked hard to dry out rainwater that had seeped into the building and install a temporary roof surface on Monday morning before the first scheduled service.

As a result the crematorium did not have to be closed and services took place as planned yesterday and will do for the remainder of the week.

Councillor Florence Nosegbe, cabinet member for culture, sport and the 2012 Games, said: “This is was appalling act that had the potential to seriously disrupt funeral services planned for this week, but thanks to the hard work of our staff who worked quickly to dry out the flooding we were able to keep the crematorium open.

“We have installed a temporary roof surface and I would like to thank the staff who dealt with the situation so professionally in keeping disruption to a minimum.

“If anyone has any information about this theft I would urge them to contact the police, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Copper is increasingly being targeted by thieves because of its high scrap value.
