London Assembly Member Val Shawcross has called on rail minister Norman Baker to support funding for an accessibility scheme at Crystal Palace station.

Transport for London have submitted a bid to the government for funds for the project which would see new lifts installed at the station and the reopening of the former Victorian ticket hall.

Ms Shawcross said: “I know this is an ongoing bugbear for commuters using Crystal Palace station. It’s imposing and beautiful, but its Victorian built size also means a reliance on stairs to get to the platforms.

“In this day and age, it’s vital that our transport infrastructure is brought up to date. The plans for the station enhance the great structure it has while making it more enjoyable for everyone to use.”

The assembly member has heard from commuters and visitors who know that the steps at Crystal Palace cause difficulties for passengers with heavy luggage, parents with buggies and anyone with a mobility problem.

Crystal Palace station now forms a terminus for the new London Overground East London Line services.

Ms Shawcross said: “Crystal Palace spans five boroughs and is very appealing as a location for both residents and visitors – not only do we have Crystal Palace Park and the National Sports Centre – which Brazil are using as a training camp for the 2012 Olympics – but a wide range of cosmopolitan shops, bars and restaurants.

“I’m concerned that people should not be put off coming to this great station and area by the access issues. I hope the minister will take my representations on board when deciding how to allocate funds.”
