The Lambeth sailing team has won the overall sailing title in Saturday’s Thames Water London Youth Games Regatta at the Royal Victoria Docks in Newham.

The team also took home a handful of individual medals for the borough as they improved on their standing of fourth place from last year’s sailing competition.

In the Optimist male class, 12 year old Tadhg O’Farrell of the London Nautical School won gold.

In the Pico male class, 15 year old Oliver Scott - another London Nautical School pupil - took gold for Lambeth.

Also mounting the top step of the podium was 15 year old Tom Mitchell and 16 year old Imogen Scott who teamed up to win the RS Feva mixed class.

There were also silver medals in the Optimist female event for 12 year old Orla Mitchell and for 14 year old Fionn O’Farrell of London Nautical School and 15 year old Jessica Burton of Dunraven School in the Pico Mixed class.

Lambeth Team Manager Richard Sheridan, who sails at senior national level, said: “We are absolutely stoked about it.

“But I am not amazed at the success, because I knew with all the support of the families and the hard training we have done that the team would do well.”

The Thames Water Regatta has been one of the great success stories of the London Youth Games. Re-launched in 2008 as a pilot after several years’ absence, it has quickly gathered momentum.

The 2011 season covers 26 competition days through to finals weekend at the National Sports Centre, Crystal Palace on July 2 and 3, including the Thames Water Regatta.

Councillor Florence Nosegbe, cabinet member for culture, sport and the 2012 Games, said: “What a fantastic achievement and I was delighted and privileged to be there to cheer the Lambeth team to victory with the Mayor, Councillor Christiana Valcarcel.

“This goes to show what talented young people we have in the borough and my congratulations go to the Lambeth team for their tremendous success.

“We are all really excited about the forthcoming London Youth Games finals and I look forward to cheering on Team Lambeth to many more triumphs as they compete against the rest of London in a range of sports next month.”
