A family fled their home after a faulty dishwasher caused a fire this morning.
Firefighters from New Malden and Sutton were called to the fire in Caldbeck Avenue, Worcester Park, at just after midnight.
The kitchen was badly damaged by smoke and flames.
A family of four evacuated the house after smelling smoke.
Their smoke alarm had not sounded because its battery was flat.
Blue watch manager Simon Chalk said because the kitchen door had been closed the fire could not spread as quickly.
He advised residents to check their smoke alarms were working and to close their kitchen doors before going to bed.
