Fourteen pubs and bars in Epsom and Ewell have been recognised at the borough's Safer Pubs and Bars Awards, the highest number since the scheme began in 2006.

Councillor Sheila Carlson, Mayor of Epsom and Ewell was joined by David Hodges, Surrey Police licensing officer, to hand out the awards on Tuesday, June 6.

The council and police monitor licensed premises using a traffic light system with points awarded if an alcohol related incident occurs.

Measures are then put in place to assess the problem or suggest improvements.

The police use a traffic light system to monitor licensed premises and if there are serious issues and they fall into the red category police may apply to the council to have its licence reviewed.

Pubs and bars which maintain a green light throughout the year are recognised with a Safer Pubs and Bars Award.

Councillor Carlson said: "This achievement not only recognises that the premises provide residents and visitors with a relaxed and safe environment, but show a willingness to continue to work in partnership with the council’s licensing team and Surrey Police.”

David Hodges, Surrey Police licensing officer said: “The success of the Safer Pubs and Bars scheme in Epsom & Ewell is a tribute to the support it has received from licensees and staff.”
