Chinese dragon dancers with fans and handkerchiefs were some of the stars at the first Celebrating Chessington event.

The sun shone as the dancers performed in the arena at Church Fields next to the St Marys Centre.

Bouncy castles, birds of prey, Zumba classes and the Kay Rose dance academy also entertained the crowds.

Organiser Natasha Earney said: “What I was really pleased about was there were a lot of familiar faces we saw but a lot of people we hadn’t seen before.

“Because it was a really nice day there were lots of people with families enjoying Church Fields. There was definitely a really good community spirit.”

Dozens of organisations including Chessington Cubs and Scouts, the British Legion, Chessington Sports Centre, and the Horticultural Society attended the event which took place on Thursday, June 2.

Chessington and Hook United FC left the hallowed turf of Chalky Lane and ran football skills sessions.

Information and advice was on offer from organisations including the Stop Smoking Service, MIND, the police’s Chessington South Safer Neighbourhood Team and the Grandparents Association.

A Chessington Fun Day was started at the King Edward Recreation Ground in Hook five years ago by the Surbiton Rotary Club to fill a gap in the community.
