Stroke services at St George's Hospital have been rated among the best in the UK, according to a new report.

The National Sentinel Audit for Stroke assessed the care of stroke patients in more than 200 trusts across England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

St George's Healthcare NHS Trust scored in the top 25 per cent for areas including access to a specialist stroke unit and communication with patients.

The trust achieved the highest score in London, with 85 per cent of its patients receiving all 12 key indicators measured by the audit.

Stroke consultant Hugh Markus said: “The trust now sees approximately 2,000 stroke patients a year. Despite this increase St George's still manages to maintain the very highest quality standard of care, as the results of this audit show.”

The trust also received top marks for its stroke care in an August 2010 audit.
