Diners looking for a night out at London’s best restaurant will not have to travel too far after a French bistro in Teddington was officially named the finest in the capital.

Retro Bistrot, in High Street, scooped the regional prize in the prestigious the Good Food Guide restaurant of the year awards.

Judges had to choose the best dining experiences the country has to offer after more than 27,500 customers nominated their favourite independent eateries, pubs and cafes from around the UK.

Vincent Gerbeau, owner of Retro Bistrot, said the award was great for Teddington.

He said: “The whole team at Retro are delighted to have been voted best restaurant in London - what an accolade.

“We're a small team, and everyone here works so hard to ensure all our diners have the best possible experience, and we're thrilled to have been recognised, especially as it's our customers who have voted for us. A huge thank you to the team for their efforts, and to our diners for their support.”

Restaurants needed to be independent, offer regional produce where possible and deliver consistently great food and excellent service in order to qualify for the awards.

Retro Bistrot fought off stiff competition from across London to be crowned the winner.

Elizabeth Carter, consultant editor of the Good Food Guide, said: “We are thrilled to name Retro as our restaurant of the year for London. With a warm welcome and all-pervading bonhomie this comfortable yet elegant bistro has everything you could want from a top local restaurant - fine food, genial service and a great sense of fun.”

Retro Bistrot was one of 10 regional winners from around the UK. One of them will be named on June 23 as the overall the Good Food Guide restaurant of the year.
