Police are appealing to London’s Ghanaian community to help find a suspected illegal immigrant who they believe raped a 16-year-old girl while she was sleeping at her Mitcham home.
The man, known as Yao, is alleged to have sexually attacked the girl in Manor Road in October 2010 and had abandoned his home address by the time the incident was reported to police.
Police suspect the man of being in the country illegally and having links to London’s Ghanaian Community.
They believe he may still have family and friends in Thornton Heath, where he is believed to have been spotted as recently as January.
He is described as a black man with short ‘afro’ hair and is approximate 5ft 4in.
Detective Constable David Gadsby, from the Metropolitan Police's Sapphire Command, said: "It is really important that we find out where this man is and who he is.
“We urgently need to speak to him regarding this allegation and we want to ensure that no other young women are vulnerable to attacks.
"We appeal to the local and Ghanaian community to give us information, or for this man to come forward and talk to us."
Anyone with iformation should call the Sapphire incident room on 020 8649 4009 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
