Two Army veterans are preparing to re-trek their 1961 Duke of Edinburgh Gold Expedition to raise money for charity.
Former Army Medical Apprentices Mike Simpson and Graham Sheppard, both in their 60s, are planning to walk 80 miles over steep and isolated Exmoor terrain in 72 hours, with packs. The pair still have the original log from their trek fifty years ago and will be following the same route, starting from Minehead Station on May 28, just as they did on May 26, in 1961, having arrived by steam train.
The walking duo are aiming to raise a five figure sum for two charities, Help4Heroes and The Princes Trust, as a thank you to the opportunities given to them by their military careers. Mr Simpson, from Kingston and Mr Sheppard, from Colchester are both are keen bird-watchers, which they hope to have time to follow whilst trekking.
