A pilot who was hit by a bullet in Afghanistan surprised his old school when he visited in his Chinook helicopter.

Flight Lieutenant Ian Fortune landed on Kingston Grammar School’s sports ground in Thames Ditton for their Combined Cadet Force’s biennial inspection on Thursday, May 5.

The former vice-captain of the school, who left in 2000, won the Distinguished Flying Cross last year for his heroic action rescuing injured soldiers while under fire in Helmand province.

After the inspection, in which the contingent passing with flying colours, head teacher Sarah Fletcher presented Flt Lt Fortune with the award for Old Kingstonian of the Year.
