A station underpass that was once compared to a Nazi death camp has been refurbished.

The pedestrian underpass at Walton station has been repainted, after taxi company Adcars offered to sponsor it.

It was officially reopened on May 9, by the company’s managing director Simon Watson, the leader of Elmbridge Council, Councillor John O’Reilly, and Tim Elkins from South West Trains.

The underpass has also been given a centrepiece in an Olympic-themed work of art, created by year 5 and 6 pupils from nearby Cleves School.

It was designed by pupil Roshan Hehar and is mounted in the foyer.

Mr Watson said: “Having grown up in Walton, I have often walked through the underpass and have always been saddened by its outlook. This sponsorship has allowed Adcars to enhance the community and we hope this is the first of many such projects. We are grateful to the staff and pupils of Cleves School.”

A former Elmbridge councillor, Lara Conaway, was criticised by the Holocaust Centre after she compared the underpass to Auschwitz at a council meeting in 2009.
