The much-loved Worcester Park war memorial has been restored to its former glory three months after it destroyed by bungling tree surgeons.

The incident happened on February 4 when a tree surgeon’s van knocked the memorial causing the plinth to smash into pieces on the concrete floor.

According to Sutton Council, the tree surgeons who hired them, cutting down a large tree in the park.

The council have stated that the tree contractors would foot the bill for a new memorial.

Speaking after the incident, councillor Adrian Davey, Chair of Cheam North and Worcester Park Local Committee, confirmed the local authority would ensure the plinth was restored “as soon as possible”.

Councillor Graham Tope, Sutton Council's leisure spokesman, said: “I am very pleased that this memorial has now been completely restored and paid for by the contractors who damaged it.

“The borough’s war memorials play a very important part in honouring those who sacrificed so much for our country.”
