Lost apple orchards are being unearthed in a new project to produce fruit for the future.
The £50,000 Heritage Lottery Funded London Orchard Project will be working with volunteers to map surviving trees and restore former sites.
Using ancient maps more than 18 hectares of land throughout London have been identified where large orchards have been removed to make way for development.
Kingston volunteers will be surveying these sites to assess their biodiversity value and condition before targeting areas for restoration work in the second half of the two-year project.
The London-wide project will train 350 volunteers in orchard restoration and fruit tree maintenance.
