A community group said it would launch a petition in response to the “over commercialisation” of Clapham Common.

It follows the three-day royal wedding event Camp Royale, which saw 200 people camping for three nights on the common, and announcements that more events will happen throughout the year.

Melanie Oxley, chairman of the Friends of Clapham Common, said the group would closely scrutinise Lambeth Council, which has booked several more for the summer, including chef Jamie Oliver’s Big Feastival and an event for 50,000 people to celebrate the London Paralympics.

She said: “The common is not a cheap hotel and that’s what it seemed like with this idea of camping. Lambeth will have to work much more closely with us, the residents and the community as a whole.

“We are campaigning against the over commercialisation of the common.

“We support family-friendly events that would still make the council some money but we are against events the size of the one planned for September, when 52,000 are expected to attend.”

The group raised concerns about too many events possibly damaging the ground and has launched a petition, to be presented to the council.

Councillor Florence Nosegbe, cabinet member for culture, sport and the 2012 Games, said: “We are holding some really positive meetings with parks friends groups and residents’ groups to discuss how we make sure local people’s views are properly heard and taken into account.

“There have been some really good ideas raised so far about how we can work better together in the future.

“There are always differing views and opinions but our job is to strike the right balance between allowing Lambeth residents and visitors the opportunity to enjoy new and exciting music, sporting and cultural activities, while respecting the needs of people who live nearby.”
