The police are calling on young people to get involved with their uniformed voluntary youth organisation - the Volunteer Police Cadets (VPC).

To give people a taste of what they do, the VPC is holding a Give it a Try Day in Fulham on Saturday, May 21, between 10am and 4pm, where potential volunteers can find out more information about the organisation and speak to people already working with the service.

The council's community safety spokesman Councillor James Cousins is also calling for adult volunteers to help get involved and pass on their experience to the teens in the service.

He said: "The motto of the VPC is 'it's not where you've come from; it's where you're going that counts'. Young people can benefit enormously from its great track record in unearthing hidden talents. Now the service needs more volunteers to help teenagers realise their full potential.

"By encouraging ambition, hard work, good citizenship and a determination to succeed through its extensive volunteering programme, the VPC is helping young people make a real difference to themselves and their neighbourhoods."

Wandsworth VPC meet at Brathway Hall in Brathway Road, Southfields, on Wednesdays between 7 - 9pm and their coordinator is PC Rick Earle.

The Wandsworth branch of the VPC were the winners of the group honour at the recent Wandsworth Young Person of the Year Awards ceremony for their valuable work in helping to improve the borough and their work on behalf of the local community.

To register an interest in attending the open day email cadets@met.police.uk, but the VPC will only be able to admit those who have registered an interest beforehand.
