In October 2009 the old and dilapidated church hall and the disused scout hut at the Church of the Good Shepherd were demolished as the site was cleared for the building of a new extension designed to be used by local community groups and local people. The new building was to augment the well used conference and meeting rooms on the south side of the church which were completed in 2001.

The building work is now finished and already the local guides, brownies and rainbow groups are meeting there. Other users include dance, exercise class, children’s music and lace making groups.

After Easter The Rainbows Montessori Pre-school established its new base in the community hall, designed specifically for pre-school use with an attractive outdoor activity area. The presence of the pre-school continues a tradition of pre-school teaching at the Good Shepherd which goes back over 40 years - only broken by the need to demolish the old hall whilst the new facilities were built.

Brenda Barron, proprietor of The Rainbows Montessori, says " We are thrilled to be able to offer our services to local families five mornings a week in this wonderful new hall and, as some of our children move onto primary school this summer, we would welcome enquiries for places for the next school year starting in September."

Over £1,000,000 of the development costs of the new extension has been raised by the church family at the Good Shepherd, which in 2005 set itself the challenge to build this facility for the benefit of the local community. The project has been supported by further funding from various grant giving bodies including Viridor Credits and the City Bridge Trust. The environmentally friendly and innovative ground source heating system also attracted grant funding.

The Rev Canon Christopher Wheaton, Vicar of the Good Shepherd says "Our church was established over 80 years ago in response to the growth of housing in Carshalton Beeches. We now have the facilities we need to continue our work at the heart of the local community for the future. Enquiries about using the hall and meeting rooms are always welcome."
