Neo-folk band Mumford and Sons have returned home and packed a theatre to raise money for the Dons.

Multi-instrumentalists Marcus Mumford and Ben Lovett, who grew up in Wimbledon, have brought their internationally-renowned band to the New Wimbledon Theatre to play for an audience full of AFC Wimbledon supporters, on Monday (May 9).

Their vigorous performance raised funds for the non-league team, who are due to play the second leg of the Blue Square Premier semi-final last night (Wednesday) against Fleetwood Town.

If the Dons win, they go through to the final and could go up to Football League 2.

Ivor Heller, the club's commercial director, said: "What a wonderful gesture it was and how amazingly grateful we are for what was a sizeable contribution by Mumford and Sons to AFC's coffers.

"It was a fantastic thing for AFC to have their home band playing in their hometown and putting on such an amazing show."

In between playing their biggest hits and new songs aplenty, at the almost two-hour long set, band members joked with the audience and teased each other on stage for the fans' amusement.

Marcus said: "We want to thank our other two band members who aren't from Wimbledon but agreed to to do this anyway."

He added it was a pleasure to play at home and that they were having a great time.

The gig was completely sold out and Marcus humourously referred to the theatre audience, which has three levels, as looking like a "wedding cake".

Supporting act Matthew and the Atlas opened the show, which was hosted by Xfm DJ John Kennedy.

Mr Kennedy also took turns with band members DJing at an after party in the Watershed to raise money for the Polka Theatre.
