Residents are being offered the chance to see some of Sutton’s bats in their natural habitat.

As part of International Biodiversity Week, which begins on May 14, residents can take part in special bat walks in the borough.

The guided walks will give residents the opportunity to learn more about the bats and to see and hear the rare creatures, which can use mature trees to roost and raise their young.

Councillor Colin Hall, Executive Member for Environment and Climate Change on Sutton Council said: “Bats are amazing animals and with 18 native species they form a vital part of the UK’s ecosystem.

“Sadly, the animals have declined rapidly over the past century and British bat populations are still under threat. Going on a bat walk is a great opportunity to find out more about bats in the borough, including how you can help them to flourish.”

There will be two guided bat walks during the week. The first is on May 14 at 8.30pm at Whitehall Museum. A small charge will apply, to book call Whitehall on 020 8643 1236.

A second walk will happen at 8.45pm on May 18, in Queen Mary’s Park. The walk costs £3.50 per person or £10 for a family of three or more.

To book call 020 8770 5821 or email sncv@sutton.gov.uk. Both walks are suitable for adults and children.
