A man from Fetcham has admitted racially abusive behaviour toward police officers in London on the day of the royal wedding.

Terence Butts, 26, of Cobham Road, pleaded guilty to the charges at Westminster Magistrates Court on Friday.

The incident happened on April 29 at 8.40am in Cockspur Street during the royal wedding celebrations.

Mr Butts had been drinking since 10pm the night before and was on his way home when he and another man forced their way past security to a restricted area where they began swearing at police officers.

The court heard how Mr Butts then made racially abusive comments saying ‘konichiwa’ three times in a derogatory manner to a Thai special constable and made further racially abusive comments to a black officer, before being arrested.

In court, Mr Butts apologised and accepted that his behaviour had been inappropriate.

Tim Greaves, defending Mr Butts said: “The comments weren’t necessarily meant to be derogatory but he can see how they could have been seen that way.”

Presiding District Judge, Quentin Purdy added: “People were out trying to enjoy themselves.

Police were tense. They were not only trying to make sure people were having a good time but were also alive to the risk of trouble. You were a distraction they could have done without.”

Mr Butts was conditionally discharged for a period of two years, ordered to pay £100 in compensation and £85 in costs to the court.
